Napanee’s Gibbard Furniture

OTTAWA, Sept. 21 — Canada’s oldest furniture factory will be closed in the new year after 173 years in business. Napanee’s Gibbard Furniture, founded in 1835 by John Gibbard in the city of Kingston in Ontario province, has failed to find a buyer in its 15-month search for a buyer, according to a Sun Media report Sunday. Even though the Canadian government has tried to help and bought from them to decorate embassies around the world, the business still cannot survive. “It’s been a long time coming,” said owner Bruce McPherson Sr..” There’ve been a lot of good years and a lot of bad years, but the last few years have not been good.” The factory has 80 workers. |
